LAKE POLUTION
Lake Ilopango is a great natural and tourist attraction in San Salvador, but it faces great challenges.
On the one hand, it is beset by pollution from several sources: the waters of this volcanic lake, the gray water from nearby towns, the garbage left behind by tourists, and the raw materials discarded by some companies.
On the other hand, the development of the area as a tourist attraction without proper planning to ensure its social and environmental sustainability.
The lake's water is not suitable for drinking, bathing, agricultural production, or fishing because of its high arsenic levels.
